Ist ein wettbewerbsfähiges Frontier-AI-Lab in Europa möglich — und wenn ja, unter welchen Bedingungen? Um diese Frage besser zu verstehen, führte ich strukturierte Gespräche mit Expertinnen und Experten aus dem KI-Umfeld.
Kontext
Die Initiative Next Frontier AI der Bundesagentur für Sprunginnovationen (SPRIND) verfolgt das Ziel, neue europäische Frontier-AI-Labs zu identifizieren und aufzubauen. Das Programm verbindet öffentliche Finanzierung, Infrastruktur und Unternehmensaufbau, um Europa im globalen Wettbewerb der KI-Entwicklung langfristig zu positionieren.
Die kommunikative, strategische und visuelle Umsetzung der Initiative entstand bei MEIRÉ. In diesem Kontext führte ich eine Reihe qualitativer Experteninterviews.
Die Gespräche fanden mit Personen aus Forschung, Industrie, Startup-Umfeld und AI-Infrastruktur statt. Ziel war es zu verstehen, wie das Vorhaben im Feld wahrgenommen wird — und welche Fragen, Erwartungen oder Zweifel sich daraus ergeben.
Ansatz
Die Gespräche wurden als qualitative Exploration mit normiertem Interviewleitfaden geführt. Ziel war kein Konsens, sondern ein möglichst klares Bild der Perspektiven im Feld.
Statt Zustimmung zu suchen, ging es darum, Spannungen sichtbar zu machen: Wo wirkt die Initiative überzeugend? Unter welchen Bedingungen würden relevante Akteure tatsächlich Teil eines solchen Vorhabens werden?

Is a competitive frontier AI lab in Europe possible — and under what conditions? To better understand this question, I conducted structured conversations with experts from across the AI ecosystem.
Context
The Next Frontier AI initiative by the German Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovation (SPRIND) aims to identify and support new European frontier AI labs. The program combines public funding, infrastructure, and company building to strengthen Europe’s long-term position in the global AI landscape.
The communicative, strategic, and visual development of the initiative was created at MEIRÉ. Within that context, I conducted a series of qualitative expert interviews.
The conversations took place with people from research, industry, startups, and AI infrastructure. The goal was to understand how the initiative was perceived within the field — and which questions, expectations, or doubts emerged.
Approach
The interviews were conducted as qualitative exploration based on a structured interview framework. The goal was not consensus but a clearer picture of perspectives within the field.
Rather than looking for agreement, the conversations focused on making tensions visible: Where does the initiative appear convincing? Under what conditions would relevant actors realistically engage with such an endeavour?
